Sea urchins belong to the class Echinoidea, which includes over 900 species spread across oceans worldwide. They’re part of the echinoderm family, sharing relatives with starfish, sand dollars, and sea cucumbers. These creatures are fascinating not just because of their distinct spiny armor but also because of their unique biological traits.

An adult sea urchin is roughly spherical, covered with long, movable spines that can be sharp or blunt depending on the species. Their skeleton, known as a «test,» is hard and made from calcium carbonate, providing protection and structure. Underneath this armor, sea urchins possess a mouth equipped with a complex jaw apparatus called «Aristotle’s lantern,» used to scrape algae from rocks or open up shells. Unlike many animals, sea urchins move using tiny tube feet along with their spines, enabling relatively slow but effective motion on the seabed.
