Who Abalone Really Are

Abalone. Who Abalone Really Are

When you hear the word “abalone,” you might imagine an exotic seafood dish or a decorative shell, but what exactly is abalone? Abalone are marine mollusks, a type of sea snail that belongs to the family Haliotidae. They possess a single, ear-shaped shell with a series of tiny holes along the edge, which help with respiration and reproduction. Unlike typical snails, abalone shells display an iridescent inner layer called mother-of-pearl, which is the reason why their shells are so prized for jewelry and ornaments.

Biologically, abalones are intriguing because they are relatively large compared to other gastropods, often growing up to 8–12 inches depending on the species. Their strong, muscular foot allows them to cling tightly to rocks, making them tough to dislodge. This behavior is not only a defense mechanism but also a way to withstand crashing waves in their coastal habitats. Scientifically, abalone are recognized by their genus name “Haliotis,” which translates to “sea ear,” a nod to the shape of their shells.

Boydakov Alex

I really like to eat delicious food, take a walk, travel, and enjoy life to the fullest. I often write notes about restaurants all over the world, about those unusual places where I have been, what I have seen and touched, what I admired and where I did not want to leave.
Of course, my opinion is subjective, but it is honest. I pay for all my trips around the world myself, and I do not plan to become an official critic. So if I think that a certain place in the world deserves your attention, I will write about it and tell you why.
